The building we find ourselves in front of is called Casa de la Tercia because a third of the church tax was collected here.

Its current function is very different, and today it houses the Olive Grove and Oil Visitor Centre which is a tribute to liquid gold, the extraordinary olive oil of this region.

Just behind, stands the Octagonal Tower, which is the only flanking tower in the walled area.

These types of towers were built outside the walls as a defensive outpost, and although they were connected to the walls at the top by bridges or arches, such links were easily destroyed to ensure the defence of the town in case they were attacked by the enemy.

The lower half of the tower is solid and in the upper part there is a room covered by the eight-sided dome which gives the tower its name.

Although it was remodelled in the 15th century, its structure suggests that it was built in the last phase of the Muslim era.
