This church is an example of how spirituality has always been deeply rooted in this town where Muslims and Christians have often used the same spaces for their religious worship.

Although originally the Church of San Isidoro, located outside the city walls, should have functioned as an Arab fort to protect the wall from invading attacks, tradition affirms that it was actually an old mosque.

The Christian construction was commissioned between the 16th and 17th centuries by Bishop Suárez de la Fuente del Sauce. In his honour, a shield was carved on one of the doors of the church, in which a willow tree rises out of the image of a fountain.

Although the external appearance of the facade is clearly Gothic, something quite unusual in the region, the interior of San Isidoro is Renaissance in style. One feature that particularly stands out is the large Corinthian columns that open the way to the chapel.
