The Church of San Millán, one of the most popular among the people of Úbeda, is also one of the oldest parish churches in the town.
It was built on an old mosque shortly after the Reconquest and still retains its robust late-Romanesque bell tower, built at the end of the 13th century.
Here the La Santísima Virgen de la Soledad (Blessed Virgin of Solitude) is worshipped. The image is taken out on procession every Good Friday and is one of the most moving and colourful moments of Úbeda´s famous Holy Week, which has been declared in its entirety as being of “National Touristic Interest”.
Every year, since the 16th century, the Brothers of the la Cofradia de la Soledad, the religious fraternity of the church, carry the image of the Virgin on their shoulders, running quickly up the steep Cuesta de la Merced, in a race to Plaza Vázquez de Molina that it is constantly interrupted by the fervent cries of onlookers.
