This church is possibly the most excellent example of Andalusian Gothic in the province. Built from the second half of the 14th century, during the 16th century all its Renaissance elements were incorporated. The main portal, Flamboyant Gothic, is also from the beginning of the 16th century. The tower was the tallest in the city until the 19th century, when it was partially demolished due to ruin and closed with the current body of bells.

The west portal, built in the mid-16th century by Vandelvira, is one of the most vigorous Mannerist pieces in all of Andalusian architecture. Above a semicircular arch, with paired columns on the sides, there are three arches with an interesting sculptural decoration by Lorenzo Brogio. In the central arch Saint Nicholas is represented and on the two smaller arches two seated tenants support, with their heads, the upper entablature. The last body is formed by a mixtilinear pediment with the representation of the Eternal Father in its tympanum and a small triangular pediment above it.

The interior of the temple consists of three naves and a polygonal head, covered by ribbed vaults on thick pillars with groups of columns. The Renaissance interventions stand out: the Chapel of Deán Ortega, whose cover is a large triumphal arch sculpturally decorated with funerary themes and closed by a magnificent polychrome grille; the sacristy, also by Vandelvira, with a lowered barrel vault and an interesting Mannerist portal; or the baptismal Chapel, which has an original semi-elliptical plan.
