  5. CHURCH OF SAN PEDRO

There are places surrounded by a halo of spirituality that do not go unnoticed by the intuitive traveller. The Church of San Pedro is one of them. Perhaps because this church, one of the three oldest parishes in the town, was built on an old mosque converted to Christian worship after the Reconquest.

Since then it has undergone various modifications, the most notable being that carried out at the beginning of the 17th century by Alonso Barba, an apprentice of the famous Jaén architect Vandelvira. It was then that the Classicist facade that we can now admire was erected. On it features the seated statue of the Saint, after whom the Church is named. This building shows the interest that Renaissance architects had in transforming the external appearance of medieval temples by modifying their facades.

It is currently being managed by the luxury hotel located in the Condes de Guadiana palace, attached to the church, and used for weddings.
