Úbeda was one of the best fortified towns in the Peninsula in medieval times.

Of the city gates that have survived to this day, one of the most magnificent and best preserved is that of Losal, probably because it is located at a point where it was not useful to demolish it.

Most of the medieval gates were demolished to allow carts to get through, but the fact that the Losal Arch is located on a twisted slope has allowed it to survive, practically intact, to the present day.

Its name comes from the marriage of Pedro del Losal and his wife Beatriz de Torres, who lived on this same street at the beginning of the 16th century, when this Mudéjar-style gate had been operating as an entry point to the town of Úbeda for two centuries.

The city gate consists of a double pointed horseshoe arch, preceded on the outside by a semicircular arch.

Next to it is a chapel with the image of the Virgen de la Soledad (Virgin of Solitude), which is worshipped every Good Friday in one of the most famous religious processions in the town.
