  5. ROYAL MONASTERY OF SANTA CLARA

In the Plaza de Santa Clara stands the Royal Monastery that gives the square its name. We are in a very special place as it is the first convent of nuns that existed in Úbeda after the Reconquest.

Queen Isabel the Catholic stayed here in 1489 when she was on her way to Granada. The building is a real mosaic of styles, amongst which the main entrance of Baroque origin stands out.

In it there is a niche with the image of Santa Clara between the royal coat of arms and the coat of arms of the Order of the Poor Clare Sisters. The door of the church, from the 13th century, is the best example of Mudéjar Gothic style preserved in the town.

The nuns make their living from the selling artisanal, homemade sweets.

Here an old tradition survives whereby the bride must deliver, before her marriage, a dozen eggs to the Poor Clare Sisters so that it does not rain on her wedding day.
