Often great discoveries are the result of chance, and the case of the Synagogue of Water is no exception. In 2007 some urban building works carried out in the heart of the historic centre of Úbeda brought to light the archaeological remains of a pre-14th century Jewish synagogue. The Synagogue of Water was opened to the public in 2010.

Now we can see first-hand how the Jewish communities that settled in Úbeda lived, as it contains various characteristic objects of Sephardic culture.

However, the most impressive part of the visit is found under the synagogue: the Mikveh. These baths dedicated to ritual purification are accessed through a passageway carved into the rock. Here the Jews purified their bodies before important religious festivals.

However, this space is not only dedicated to Jewish culture. The old synagogue was occupied by the Christian Inquisition to accommodate the House of the Inquisitor by edict of the Catholic monarchs who expelled the Jews from the Peninsula.
