  5. THE CLOCK TOWER AND OLD BUTCHER SHOPS

Despite its name, this tower was not originally crowned with a clock, as it was built as part of the old medieval wall in the 12th century. Its function was to defend the now defunct Puerta de Toledo city gate, which was the busiest in the town as it gave access to Úbeda from the towns of Baeza, Jaén, and Seville, as well as from the court.

It was in the second half of the 16th century that it was decided to extend the tower, adding a second part to house a clock and the bell tower.
Since then, it has become an important part of everyday life, marking the rhythms of the day for the people of Úbeda who frequently pass through Plaza de Andalucía, one of the hubs of life in this town of Jaén.

In addition, the Clock Tower has an important symbolic value. Its base shelters the Gothic image of the Virgen de los Remedios, before which King Carlos V and his son Felipe II swore to safeguard the charters and privileges of the town.

The building of the Old Butcher´s has been attached to the Clock Tower since 1885 and from it you can gain access to climb the tower. The interior currently houses the Tourist Office.
