Historically, Úbeda’s strategic position has made it a highly coveted town. In the 10th century, when the town was under Muslim control, Úbeda was walled.

During the Reconquest it became one of the most important walled towns in the region, due to its border position.

There are written testimonies from the 16th century that refer to the wall as “very strong and beautifully turreted”. In fact, a famous poem from Úbeda indicates that there were as many as 35 towers which were guarded by the most famous families in the city.

Although the Napoleonic wars and population growth led to this tower´s deterioration, today it still has many remains that are part of an ambitious project to redevelop the medieval wall. This project culminates in the Portillo de Santo Cristo Visitor´s Centre. Located in one of the most magnificent towers in Úbeda.

Inside you can take a chronological journey through the history of the city and its wall, accompanied by multiple multimedia resources that will allow you to learn about the life and defensive needs of a border town. In addition, you can enjoy exceptional views of the olive groves that extend as far as the eye can see.
