We find ourselves in one of the most beautiful sections of Ubeda’s city walls, which extends from the Losal city gate to Santa Lucía city gate.

The walls were built by the Muslims in the 10th century and Úbeda became one of the most important walled towns in the region during the Reconquest.

In front of it, a green space called “Huerto del Carmen”, which once belonged to the convent of San Miguel, has been open here for centuries.

The street Calle del Carmen was the final stretch of San Juan de la Cruz´s journey on the donkey owned by Doña María Barcaller, sister of the Marquis of Santa Cruz, to reach the convent where he would die. That is why the public park that now occupies the space is the ideal spot to relax and take in the vast, misty views of olive groves that unfold before our eyes, reading an anthology of poems by one of our best mystical poets.
